Losing Your Coverage

Events that Cause COBRA to End

Your COBRA coverage doesn’t last forever. The length of time that you can have COBRA depends on your qualifying event.

COBRA coverage may end when:

  • You reach the last day of your maximum coverage period.
  • Your premiums are not paid on time.
  • Your former employer no longer maintains any group health plan.
  • You obtain coverage under another group health plan, and the new plan doesn’t have an exclusion or limitation for any pre-existing condition of a qualified beneficiary.
  • A qualified beneficiary becomes entitled to Medicare benefits after electing COBRA.
  • It’s a good idea to know about other coverage options before COBRA ends.
